Songs of the Free is the third studio album by the post-punk band Gang of Four, released in 1982. It marked a significant departure from their earlier work, incorporating elements of funk and new wave while maintaining their characteristic sharp lyrics and political commentary. The album explores themes of freedom, oppression, and social issues, reflecting the band's Marxist ideology and critique of modern society. The sound is marked by a blend of jangly guitars, rhythmic bass lines, and the prominent use of brass instruments, which contributed to its unique feel. Although it did not achieve mainstream success, it has received critical acclaim and is considered a significant work in the post-punk genre, influencing various artists and movements in the years since its release.
