A church leader in Essex has spoken out in support of a striking memorial bench honoring Keith Flint, the late frontman of The Prodigy, after some residents questioned its unusual design. The bench, installed at St Mary's Church, features carved devil-horn shapes inspired by Flint’s iconic hairstyle and stage persona.

The tribute sits near Flint’s grave in the churchyard, where he was laid to rest after his death in 2019 at the age of 49. While many fans and locals have praised the memorial as a fitting tribute to the influential performer, others have raised concerns that the horned design feels out of place in a Christian burial ground.

Responding to the criticism, Reverend Rod Reid defended the installation, explaining that the memorial was carefully planned with respect for both the location and Flint’s legacy. According to Reid, members of the band and Flint’s family worked closely with designers to ensure the tribute reflected the singer’s distinctive image while remaining appropriate for the churchyard.

The bench was commissioned by Flint’s bandmates and created in collaboration with the artist collective Free Range Designs. Its blackened oak finish and carved horn silhouette reference Flint’s famous spiked “devil horn” hairstyle—an unmistakable look that helped define the visual identity of The Prodigy during the group’s rise to fame in the 1990s.

Reid, who also conducted Flint’s funeral in 2019, said the memorial has deep meaning for the surrounding community. Many residents of nearby Braintree remember seeing Flint and bandmate Liam Howlett performing locally before the group achieved international success. For those fans, the bench serves as a lasting tribute to a hometown figure whose energy and style left a mark on electronic music culture.

Despite the debate over its design, supporters say the bench captures the spirit of Flint and celebrates the legacy of a performer whose rebellious image and explosive stage presence helped make The Prodigy one of the most influential acts in dance-rock history.
