KORN's Munky Shaffer Reveals Nearly 40 Songs Written for Upcoming Album
In a recent interview with Igor Miranda of Rolling Stone Brasil, KORN guitarist James 'Munky' Shaffer discussed the ongoing writing and recording sessions for the band's much-anticipated follow-up to their 2022 album, 'Requiem'. Munky stated, 'It's taking a fucking long time. We've written probably almost 40 songs, and gone through 'em, and rewrote 'em, and got rid of 'em, and tore 'em apart, and rebuilt 'em.'
He continued, highlighting the band's critical approach towards their music: 'We're very particular because we wanna keep our original sound. When we start playing, it sounds like KORN, especially with all five of us.' He praised the contributions of current bassist Roberto Díaz, noting how he has added energy to the rhythm section alongside drummer Ray Luzier.
Munky elaborated on the creative process, saying, 'As an artist, you don't wanna paint the same picture over and over again. You wanna add some flavor, add some color, so it feels fresh.' He reassured fans that while the new music will maintain KORN's signature sound, it will also include new elements without straying too far from their roots.
When asked about the delay in releasing new music, Munky explained, 'We had quite an extensive touring schedule, especially after COVID. We were excited to get back on the road.' He also reflected on the importance of not releasing mediocre music, stating, 'We want to keep something fresh.'
Additionally, Munky addressed the absence of original bassist Reginald 'Fieldy' Arvizu, who is currently taking time off to heal from personal struggles. He acknowledged the challenges of creating music without Fieldy but noted that the band has adapted and continued to thrive in their writing process.
