Rock legend Neil Young is channeling his political frustrations into a new creative surge. The 80-year-old icon recently revealed via the Neil Young Archives that he has returned to the studio with his band, The Chrome Hearts, to record an album aimed directly at the current U.S. administration.
Young, who has never been shy about using his platform for protest, described the current American political landscape as "sad and depressing." In a blunt critique of Donald Trump, Young wrote: "We have the worst president in the history of our country. Every day, a bad TV show produced by DJT is what we get."
The upcoming project is moving at a rapid pace, with Young confirming that eight new songs have already been completed. Despite feeling "exhausted" by the constant cycle of political news, the musician noted that the recording process has provided a necessary sanctuary, stating simply, "Music is."
This new material follows a string of defiant moves by the "Rockin' in the Free World" singer. Earlier this year, Young famously gifted his entire music catalog to the people of Greenland for free—a pointed response to the president’s renewed interest in the territory. He also recently cleared his schedule by canceling a planned 2026 tour to prioritize his health and focus on these recordings.
The new tracks are expected to expand on the themes of his 2025 single "Big Crime," which criticized the administration’s policies. For Young, this record serves as a sonic manifesto against what he describes as an administration "destroying America bit by bit."
While an official release date has not yet been announced, the speed of the sessions suggests that fans won't have to wait long to hear Young’s latest musical protest.
