Tribute to Frank Beard
Frank Beard, the longtime drummer for legendary rock band ZZ Top, has passed away at the age of 77. According to reports, he died on August 17 at his Texas ranch, surrounded by family after a hospice stay. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
ZZ Top founder Billy F. Gibbons expressed his sorrow, stating, “Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top. The band of which he was part for six decades is going to keep on keeping on as he had wished.”
In light of Frank's passing, ZZ Top has canceled their upcoming shows in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs, but they plan to resume performances this weekend at the Austin City Limits festival, a venue that Frank cherished.
Frank Beard joined ZZ Top in 1969, marking over five decades of collaboration with Gibbons and the late bassist Dusty Hill. He played on all 15 of the band's studio albums, contributing to hits like “La Grange,” “Tush,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Legs.”
ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, maintaining their classic lineup until Dusty’s death in 2021. Frank Beard's legacy will undoubtedly continue to resonate within the rock music community.
Rest in peace, Frank.
