Curtis Mayfield was an American singer, songwriter, and record producer, born on June 3, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. He began his musical career in the 1950s as a member of the Impressions, a group that played a significant role in the development of soul music. The Impressions produced several hits, including 'People Get Ready' and 'It's All Right.' In 1970, Mayfield embarked on a solo career, characterized by his smooth falsetto voice and socially conscious lyrics. His solo debut album, 'Curtis,' was released in 1970 and included the iconic track 'Move On Up.' He continued to release critically acclaimed albums throughout the 1970s, including 'Superfly,' which served as the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film of the same name. Mayfield's music often addressed themes of social justice, love, and empowerment. In 1990, he was paralyzed from the neck down due to an onstage accident, but he continued to make music until his death on December 26, 1999.
