history
Soundgarden was formed in 1984 in Seattle, Washington, by guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Hiro Yamamoto, and drummer Matt Cameron. They were one of the pioneering bands of the grunge movement, blending heavy metal, punk rock, and alternative rock elements. The band's popularity surged further with their 1994 album 'Superunknown,' which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and included iconic tracks such as 'Black Hole Sun' and 'Spoonman.' After disbanding in 1997, Soundgarden reunited in 2010, releasing their sixth studio album, 'King Animal,' in 2012. The band continued to tour until the tragic death of lead vocalist Chris Cornell in May 2017.
